Frequently Asked Questions

Obstacle course racing, DEKA, HYROX, and training in Rochester, NY.

Where can I train for a Spartan Race in Rochester, NY?

Ruckhouse Athletics on University Avenue offers coached obstacle course race training in Rochester, NY. We prepare athletes for Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, Savage Race, and Bonefrog by building the grip, carries, running under fatigue, and obstacle skills the course actually demands.

What obstacle course races do you train people for?

We coach for all the major obstacle course races, including Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, Savage Race, and Bonefrog, plus hybrid fitness racing like DEKA and HYROX. Whether it is your first race or your fiftieth, we tailor the training to the event and your current level.

Do you offer HYROX training in Rochester?

Yes. Our HYROX programming pairs running with the functional workout stations HYROX is built on, with smart progressions for first-timers and competitors alike. It is one of the few dedicated HYROX training options in the Rochester area.

What is DEKA and are you a DEKA affiliate?

DEKA is a functional fitness race built around 10 strength and endurance zones. Ruckhouse Athletics is a DEKA Affiliate gym, so we coach all 10 zones and host DEKA events right here in Rochester.

Do I need to be in shape before I start OCR training?

No. Most of our members start before they feel ready. We scale every workout to your level and coach first-timers all the way to their first finish line.

How long does it take to train for an obstacle course race?

Most first-timers train for 8 to 12 weeks, depending on the race and where they are starting from. We will map out a realistic timeline for you at your free consultation.

Do you offer personal training and beginner-friendly classes?

Yes. We offer one-on-one and small-group personal training plus beginner-friendly group classes, all in a private studio setting rather than a big-box gym. We coach every level, from complete beginners to experienced competitors.
